Employers Turn Against WFH candidates

Discover how the post-pandemic shift in remote work is affecting career opportunities and business services

I saw this headline in The Times recently and was intrigued to read the article as Working From Home is such a hot potato in business following the pandemic. It remains a common theme amongst our Business Leaders in our Pabasso boards.

Apparently almost a third of SMEs would now be less inclined to take someone on who asked to WFH 2 days a week and 7% said it would be a deal breaker  - according to a survey undertaken by Employment Hero a company provisioning HR services.

There is no doubt that a significant number of people enjoyed working from home during the pandemic, as at that time it was a novelty and they had little option.

However for some it has become a habit - and it may not be a good one. We know from a WFH trial done in China well before the pandemic that people WFH missed out on promotions, out of sight out of mind.

But what about the osmosis of learning and the mental health issues emerging from isolation?

There are many arguments for and against WFH but it would appear that a significant number of employers are now resisting a predominantly WFH culture (except perhaps the government!).

Am I the only one that has noticed that B2B service levels have dropped dramatically following the pandemic? I wonder if the WFH phenomenon has anything to do with it?

The bottom line is that the inexperienced don’t know what they are missing by not being in an environment around experienced colleagues (never mind the mental value of physical human interaction).

Worst still, the experienced don’t realise how they are hampering their inexperienced colleagues' development by not being on hand to share their expertise, experience and knowledge through the osmosis of learning - and that used to happen in every workplace.

Perhaps WFH 1 day a week is the answer for the majority?
