Company Organisation Charts – Every Organisation Should Have One!

When joining a new business or engaging with them as an advisor or potential investor one of the greatest assets the business can provide is an organisation chart or organogram.

When joining a new business or engaging with them as an advisor or potential investor one of the greatest assets the business can provide is an organisation chart or organogram.

They are also a great tool for Management to review regularly when growing, consolidating, acquiring or reorganising.

I think they are essential for every organisation.

There was a time when creating organisation charts was a challenge as there were no specific software packages available to do this. This resulted in no one wanting to own or maintain the Org Chart and an out-of-date Org Chart is worse than no Org Chart at all.

However, times have changed and there is now a plethora of tools available to easily produce, maintain and share your Org Chart.

Everyone wants to know who they and their colleagues report to, where they sit in the hierarchy and what career paths are open to them.

Personally, I recommend that you include, for everyone on the Org Chart, a mugshot, their position, their contact coordinates and their start date. This helps massively with induction and the start date is very useful when experienced support is needed.

There is plenty of supporting evidence on the web available as to the advantages of having an Org Chart, I am bemused when businesses do not have an organisation chart given their value and how easy they are now to produce and maintain.

Perhaps it’s a concern over the employee list getting into the wrong hands and your team being approached. Ever heard of Linkedin?
